General Chemistry 1 Topics

Updated: Mar 21, 2023

Here is a list of all of the topics covered in General Chemistry 1. These topics may differ from school to school however, these are the majority of the topics. I've never been able to find a list like this on google before so that's why I've added it. I've also added it to keep myself on track as these are all the topics I would like to eventually add under General Chemistry 1.

If you are looking to learn about chemistry outside of a classroom I would recommend openstax free textbooks. These textbooks are 100% free and great resources.

General Chemistry 1 Concepts

Essentials of General Chemistry

- Introduction to Unit Conversions

- Atoms, Molecules, and Ions

- Atomic Theory

- Atomic Structure

- Chemical Formulas

- Ions and Charges

Chemical Bonding and Molecular Geometry

- Ionic Bonding

- Covalent Bonding

- Nomenclature

- Lewis dot structures

- Formal Charge and Resonance

- Molecular Structure

Advanced bonding Theory

- Valence Bond Theory

- Hybrid atomic orbitals

- Double and Triple Bonds

- Molecular Orbital Theory

Composition of Substances and Solutions

- Formula Mass

- Empirical and Molecular Formulas

- Molarity

Chemical Reactions

- Writing and Balancing Chemical Equations

- Classifying Chemical Reactions

- Stoichiometry

- Yield and Limiting Reagent

Liquids and Solids

- Intermolecular Forces

- Dissolution

- Electrolytes

- Solubility

Acids and Bases

- Acids and Bases Overview

- Bronsted-Lowry Definition

- Arrhenius Definition

- acid and base strength

Equilibria

- Precipitation reactions

- Lewis Acids and Bases

Electrochemistry

- Redox Chemistry

I know this seems like a lot. However, many of these topics are very brief or relatively easy to understand. General Chemistry 2 has fewer topics but they are more complicated and go more in-depth.
